Half-cloth and marbled boards. Gilt title and date on the spine. A variant with pagination as follows: [1]-9, 2-3, 12-16. Complete. New endpapers. The lower corners and spine ends are bumped. There is a half-inch indent/tear to the rear board that affects the blank endpapers. Small stain to the last text page although all is quite readable. There is a small amount of writing to the upper title page. Perhaps a name and then, "from 1679 to 1689". The writing appears to be contemporary with the publication of the book.; In English history, a totally fictitious but widely believed plot in which it was alleged that Jesuits were planning the assassination of King Charles II in order to bring his Roman Catholic brother, the Duke of York (afterward King James II), to the throne. The allegations were fabricated by Titus Oates, a renegade Anglican clergyman who had feigned conversion to the Roman Catholic church the year before and spent a few months as a student at two English seminaries abroad, from both of which he was expelled. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall
