Inscribed to "Mrs. Genl. Grant with kind regards", dated and signed by G. W. Childs on second fep. This is the wife of Ulysses S. Grant, and the book came from a collection that once belonged to the Grant family. Green leather covered boards with gilt titles and motifs. Front hinge is tender, and split from bottom edge up by about 2''. Rear hinge is not as fragile, but the surface of the leather over it is worn and chipping as it is over the front hinge. Waterstain starting at bottom edges, covering about 1/5 of front board and 1/3 of rear board. Just barely affects the bottom edges of last few pages. Light wear to board edges, bumped corners. All edges of text block gilt. Glossy marbled pastedowns and eps. Binding tight, text clean. Scattered foxing to interior, strongest on first/last few pages.
